CHINA – The government is considering a ban on the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in plastic baby bottles, says the Chinese Center of Disease Control and Prevention Center.

The deputy director of the nutrition and food safety institute Li Ning revealed that health authorities have begun research on the dissolution volume of BPA in baby bottles to assess its impact on infants’ health.

Last month, the Ministry of Health called for public comment on a draft list of legal substances in food packaging, with BPA listed as being banned from use in vessels having direct contact with baby food.

The European Union has already passed legislation banning the production of BPA in baby bottles from 1 June 2011. The import, sale and marketing of such products will be disallowed from 1 June 2011.

While studies showed that BPA is safe for up to a daily intake of 0.05 milligrams per kilo of bodyweight, the European Food Safety Authority was also concerned about the possible impact of the chemical on infants.
