"Most of the packaging solutions on show at Tokyo Pack will take years to filter through to Western markets; some will never be seen outside Japan"
|
Market Driven sustainability is an integral part of the culture of Corporate Social Responsibility - driven by strict legislation and supported by the majority of consumers, the Japanese packaging industry leads the world in developing technological front-end solutions to the crisis of packaging consumption, waste and a rapidly aging population.
Sustainability Symposium:
Run parallel to each Tokyo Pack, JPI organises
its Member-only biannual symposium; this year's topic - Challenge of Packaging to Create the Sustainable Society - will be addressed by international experts in the field of Sustainable Packaging.
Serious Packaging R&D budgets are allocated by all sectors of Japan's packaging industry to create market-driven packaging solutions, the latest of which are showcased at Tokyo Pack.
A Sales Platform for major Japanese packaging conglomorates such as Dainippon, Toppan, Rengo and Toyo Seikan, Tokyo Pack consistantly attracts more than 200,000 industry visitors - buyers, brand owners and converters - from all over Japan looking to source innovative packaging to differentiate themselves in Japan's price sensitive markets.

Best Packaging Awards: Tokyo Pack is the industry platform for the exhibition of the highly coveted Japan Packaging Institute's "Good Packaging Awards". The Japanese equivalent of PackStar or Ameristar, each award winning package has been judged to be the 'best of the best' of Japanese packaging and is displayed in a special Display of Honour in the exhibition hall.
A Networking Event: The Tokyo Pack opening ceremony and Japan Packaging Industry Members' Welcome Reception are the industry network event. Held with all formality, pomp and curcumstance expected by Japanese culture, these ceremonial occasions are launched by a VVIP (in past years either a member of the Imperial Royal Family, or Government Minister) and are attended by the very top management (Presidents & CEO) of all of Japan's leading packaging conglomorates and the Presidents of Packaging Institutes and Associations from 14 Asian countries.
Concurrent Events: In parallel to the main Tokyo Pack '08 a series of concurrent events are being run:
- Tokyo International Packaging Symposium: Challenge of Packaging to Create the Sustainable Society
- Tokyo Mat 2008 - Organized by Japanese Material Handling Society (the sister organization of JPI), Tokyo Mat showcases material handling equipment for the promotion of its sales targeting at packaging related users.

About Tokyo Pack: Owned and organised by JPI and held biannually, Tokyo Pack is Asia’s premier packaging exhibition - the largest in the Asia Pacific region:
- 2,600 booths
- 500 companies
- 23,000 square metres (237.5 sq ft).
Eco Theme: Each year the exhibition adopts a central theme which is reflected and interpreted by all exhibitors. This year, in line with global issues and concerns, the theme is ‘Packaging to Create Good Environment and Clean Earth’.
According to JPI, specific emphasis will be given to “equipment for environmental protection and environmentally conscious machinery” - that is, packaging machinery engineered to consume less energy with minimum waste.
More than Machines: While eqipment and machines are the main attraction at conventional packaging exhibitions - Tokyo Pack is not a conventional exhibition - it is a celebration of The Package, with more exhibition space taken up by converters and packaging manufactureres than by equipment suppliers.
Tokyo Pack features the latest innovative Japanese pack formats, the cutting edge of Japan’s packaging technology ranging from the quirky and uniquely Japanese, to the advanced packaging materials, processes and technology which often takes several years before it is seen outside Japan.
