Over the last decade, the flexible packaging industry has had a clear trend towards fl exo printing. The fl exo process has experienced a dramatic enhancement of quality, referred to in the industry as “gravure like quality”.
CNC controlled printing decks, offered in combination with direct drives, as well as sleeve systems for fast plate cylinder and anilox roll changes, either on or outside of the machine, are
considered standard components of a state-of-the-art fl exographic printing press today. Other developments aimed at reducing press set-up times include systems for makeready of unused decks with the machine running or fully automated ink supply and wash-up systems. question as to which printing process should be the most suitable one for specifi c packaging applications has recently regained importance.
The three rivalling, though partly complementary processes - fl exo, gravure, and offset - are each looking for opportunities to acquire new market sectors in addition to their traditional applications and to transfer their inherent advantages to other products.
