India - The Malayala Manorama, a newspaper based in Kottayam, Kerala, India, is building one of the most ambitious installations based on Adobe's InDesign software. The newspaper, which publishes over 50 different editions in the Malayalam language, previously used a system developed from Microsoft Word and Lotus Notes by Sansui, an Indian systems integrator, who have also developed the new system. The new system, which has a portable document format (PDF) based workflow, will add several new features, such as thumbnail views and remote access to the up to 160 pages that could be in production at a given time. All page elements are visible to everyone, but only certain elements are unlocked for a given user. Only the newspaper's chief sub-editor has full access to all the editorial elements. Completed stories are tagged with NewsML and routed to the papers Vignette content management system. A Lotus Notes workflow engine manages copy flow, and an SQL database stores multiple versions of stories for tracking and archiving. Advertisements will also be produced on InDesign and merged with PDF files of the editorial content. The combined PDFs are preflight checked and then RIPed for final output at remote printing centres. Approximately 1.24m copies of the paper are then printed at 13 remote sites |
