Packaging 301: Packaging Material Technology

Understanding the properties of packaging material and considerations for procurement  is a highly scientific process that all staff whose position brings them in contact with packaging should be familiar with.
  • What are the main packaging materials?
  • What processes do they use?
  • How are they best applied to Rigid Plastics •  Flexible Packaging • Paper & Board
  • How to optimise production & procurement
An essential guide for both local Brand owners & Packaging Suppliers to commissioning materials for packaging.
These  modules are delivered  at PRELIMINARY & INTERMEDIATE levels for Brand Owners & Packaging Suppliers to provide a solid technical foundation

PACKAGING 301.1 Packaging Material Technology
Level: Preliminary
Duration: 1/2 Day

Who Should Attend?

Non packaging specialists : Brand Owner Marketing/ Graphic & Structural Designers whose job brings them into contact with packaging.

Objectives:
An entry level course to provide a foundation for packaging conversion technology including the opportunities and limitations of each process.
Outcomes:
Students will gain an appreciation of different materials & production processes, what Components are produced by each and why. How different materials provide protection.

Course Content:

Introduction to Packaging Materials

  • What materials & processes are typically used for end use products:
    • Food, Beverage, Household Products, Cosmetics, Consumer Electronics etc

Polymers

  • What polymers (plastics) are used in rigid and flexible plastics manufacture.
  • What are their key properties

Moulding Processes

  • Blow, Injection, Injection Blow and Injection Stretch Blow what are they and when are they used
  • Flexible Materials and Conversion Processes
  • Mono, multi-layer and laminate materials what are they and what do they offer

Paper and Board

  • Virgin and recycled materials, what is corrugation and box making.
  • When are paper and board (fibre based materials) best used.
Packaging 301.2: Packaging Material Technology
Level: Intermediate
Duration: 1 Day
Who Should Attend?
  • Specialists new to the Packaging Function.
  • Non Packaging Specialists (project managers, quality managers, procurement, structural designers) who need a good understanding of packaging conversion technology .
Objectives
To provide a detailed appreciation of the technology alternatives for producing different types of packaging, what differing design opportunities are offered by different technologies and what influences costs
Outcomes:
Students will understand the basics of all the key conversion technologies for rigid plastics, flexibles and paper and board, how technology and design are linked and what factors influence package cost for each technology
Course Content:
Polymers
  • Types of Polymer - properties and uses
Moulding Processes
  • Blow Moulding
  • Extruders, heads, blowing and cooling. Single station, double station and long stroke machines.
  • Blow Moulds and ancillary equipment.
  • What drives costs

  • What to look for when deciding which rigid  plastic, flexible and paper and board Suppliers to use.
  • Infrastructure is important!

Packaging 301.3: Packaging Material Technology

An in-depth analysis of Packaging Conversion Technology & how decisions about materials impact on costs.

• Detailed analysis of the processes used

• Advantages, disadvantages of these processes.

These modules can be delivered individually or together as a 4 day course to give comprehensive production knowledge.

It is recommended that Print modules from Unit 303 Print Production & Management be incorporated into this course.

Packaging 301.3: Packaging Material Technology
Level: Advanced
Duration: 1, 2 or 3 Days

Who Should Attend?

Packaging Technologists and Structural Designers etc who require a good understanding of packaging conversion technologies and how they impact costs.

This  Unit is delivered  at ADVANCED level only and is delivered as three separate modules to suit your needs:

  • A. Polymers
  • B. Flexible Materials & Conversion
  • C. Paper & Board

Note: These topics can be delivered individually, or together as a 4-Day complete Material Technology.

They can also be combined with Module 303.2: Managing Pre-press & Print for Packaging for a comprehensive 1 week Packaging Technology Course.

Objectives:

To provide an in depth analysis of packaging conversion technologies, what is state of the art, what are the main cost drivers and why cost models are useful. How paper and board is produced, including corrugation and box making
